The Lead
Columbia Distributing has closed its purchase of certain beverage distribution assets in Alaska from Republic National Distributing Company, entering the state for the first time and finishing the letter of intent the two companies signed in April. The deal pushes Columbia's direct service area past 835,000 square miles and brings in nearly 1,500 customer accounts. It follows the June 30 close of RNDC wine and spirits rights in Oregon and Washington and a September partnership with Idaho's Hayden Beverage, giving Columbia direct operations in Alaska, Oregon and Washington plus the Idaho tie-up. Terms were not disclosed.
Republic National Distributing Company has reached a settlement with its unsecured creditors, clearing the way for its Chapter 11 liquidation to proceed. A judge has also approved the sales of RNDC's operations in Alaska, Kentucky and Michigan.
France is asking the United States to drop tariffs on its wine, spirits and Champagne, pointing to the relief Washington granted Irish whiskey in September when President Donald Trump lifted duties on that category. French minister Nicolas Forissier raised the matter directly with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and repeated it ahead of an informal gathering of EU trade ministers in Dublin, per MLex. Paris contends its alcohol exports deserve treatment on par with Irish whiskey rather than a harsher tariff regime, with the appeal spanning still wine, sparkling wine and spirits. It is not clear whether Washington has replied, what the full scope of the tariffs at issue is, or whether other EU members will back the request.
The Briefing
A US district judge in Eastern Tennessee on October 23 rejected founder Fawn Weaver's request for an injunction to stop a sale of Uncle Nearest's assets while her appeal against the receivership is pending, finding she had not shown a likelihood of success or irreparable harm, and that blocking a sale could harm receiver Phillip G Young Jr, lender Farm Credit Mid-America and other creditors. The whiskey business has been in court-ordered receivership since August 2025 after defaulting on more than $100 million owed to Farm Credit, three potential buyers are in the running, and Weaver's receivership appeal is set to be heard December 11 in the Sixth Circuit. Indian investigators have told firms that bulk Scotch concentrates do not qualify and must be declared under a classification carrying the full 150% duty, following revenue intelligence visits to Pernod Ricard, Diageo's local subsidiary, and Allied Blenders & Distillers.
