U.S. import ban shuts most Canadian spirits, wine and beer out of the market
A U.S. ban on imports of some Canadian alcohol, along with dairy byproducts, motorcycles and molasses, took effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday, blocking affected producers from the American market entirely. Spirits stand to lose the most: the U.S. bought $673 million worth of Canadian spirits in 2025, against $62.1 million in wine and $19.2 million in beer, per U.S. Census Bureau data, and Spirits Canada president Cal Bricker says roughly 93 percent of the country's spirits exports go south. The ban exempts barrels of certain liquors above a set volume, and tariffs were dropped on bulk shipments of some whiskies and liqueurs when the measures were introduced earlier this month, which KPMG Law's Robert Glasgow says spares large multinationals with facilities on both sides of the border while leaving smaller distillers, breweries and vineyards exposed. The move follows the White House citing Canada's treatment of American alcohol, dairy and autos when it set 50 percent tariffs in July, and the Distilled Spirits Council reports U.S. spirits sales to Canada fell 70 percent and wine exports dropped 87 percent in 2025 after provinces pulled American bottles from shelves.

A federal ban on intoxicating hemp-derived delta-9 THC products, which would cap them at 0.4 milligrams total, is scheduled to take effect December 11 after being delayed from November 12, putting at risk a category that Whitney Economics puts at more than $1.1 billion in sales. Producers including Cann, Nowadays, and Crescent Canna are hedging by rolling out compliant sub-0.4mg or nonintoxicating lines and, in Crescent's case, moving 50mg seltzers to cannabis-derived THC for dispensary sale, while the bipartisan Beverage Regulatory Parity Act, which would limit drinks to 5mg per serving under alcohol-style three-tier, 21-and-up rules, has not advanced.
